The polar reference stars are plotted based on your current location and time. If location services are available everything is automatic but there is a facility for manually setting your location if it isnt available.
For southern hemisphere users this app will generate the Octans asterism which will assist you to identify the southern polar reference star - Sigma Octans. Sigma Octans is about magnitude 5.3 which makes it hard to identify on its own but when you can see it in relation to the other nearby stars the task becomes easier.
